Hewanorra International Airport (UVF)

Hewanorra International Airport in Vieux Fort, Saint Lucia, is the larger of the island's two airports and is managed by the Saint Lucia Air and Seaports Authority (SLASPA).

The airport is a Fire Category 9 airport that handles 500,000 passengers a year and has the capability to handle the Boeing 747, Airbus A330, Airbus A340 and other similar aircraft. Aircraft maintenance there is carried out by Caribbean Dispatch Services.

Hewanorra International Airport was originally named Beane Army Airfield and was used as a military airfield by the United States Army Air Force Sixth Air Force and used in World War II. Beane Field was activated in early 1941 with a mission to defend Saint Lucia against an enemy attack.

The former USAF base was then refurbished and converted into a commercial airport. There is a disused northeast/southwest runway north of the main east-west runway that was part of the military airfield. it is in poor condition, along with a few dispersals.

The airport is situated on the main highway running north to south on the island, and is served by all taxi companies on the island. The trip to Castries takes about an hour - an hour and a half - road conditions are currently acceptable. Local buses are also available but services are infrequent.

Beyond Immigration and Customs on departure you will find a small selection of duty free shops for locally made goods as well as the usual cigarettes and spirits and a couple of snack bars.

Facilities: The airport has a few shops and bars, a branch of the Bank of St Lucia with an ATM machine, and a bureau de change which opens between 12 and 4.30pm. There are good facilities for disabled passengers.

Departure tax: EC $68 for all passengers over 12 years old, $35 for local nationals.

George FL Charles Airport (SLU) -  Formally known as

 "Vigie Airport"

George F. L. Charles Airport , Formerly known as Vigie Airport is located in Castries and handles inter-Caribbean flights.and is the smaller of two airports in Saint Lucia, the other being Hewanorra International Airport. It is located 2 km north of Castries, the capital city. George F. L. Charles Airport is managed by the Saint Lucia Air and Seaports Authority (SLASPA). The Airport is also near to a large number of hotels in the north end of the island.  Its runway runs parallel to a pristine beach, Vigie Beach, which is a popular tourist attraction. This airport handles 32,000 flights per year carrying 394,000 passengers and handles much of the regional and Caribbean flights. With flights from no further afield than San Juan in Puerto Rico.

George F. L. Charles Airport was renamed on 4 August 1997 in honor of Saint Lucia politician Sir George Frederick Lawrence Charles (1916-2004)., The first chef misnister of the island!

George F. L. Charles Airport, which, due to its size and proximity to the capital city Castries, plays host to a number of general aviation and commuter airlines linking Saint Lucia to the other territories of the Eastern Caribbean.

Not withstanding its size and physical characteristics, George F. L. Charles Airport attracts a greater volume of air traffic than Hewanorra International Airport. The airport is serviced by a number of Airlines including American Eagle, Leeward Island Air Transport (LIAT) 1974 Limited, BWIA Express, Air Caraibes, Eagle Air and Carib Aviation (Saint Lucia) Limited, all of which engage principally in the transport of passengers. Federal Express and DHL operate daily services in support of their courier service, while Amerijet International operate cargo services between Miami and Saint Lucia three times weekly. A multitude of single and twin engine pleasure aircraft frequent this airport. the average annual passenger throughput for George F. L. Charles Airport is 394,000 while the average annual aircraft movement is 32,000.

Many of our hotels are in the north end of the island, hence this airport is most convenient if you are coming from another Caribbean island and are staying up north.

There are multiple check-in desks for the various abovementioned airlines. The Airport is furnished with a small restaurant/bar, washrooms, public telephones and a tiny book shop/stand.  There are also car rental booths, Tambou and a Duty Free shop. Vigie Beach is across the road and boasts a good assortment of local bars with food and drink at very affordable prices

“Ben’s the man! The Pitons makea such a spectacular location with guests on board, and with Ben there organizing everything for us, we had them off for a helicopter ride, an island tour… and up to the Ladera resort for sundowners. He really was the perfect contact.”

“Ben was a great guy to work with, who looked after us in every way. He took our chef and stewardess off to source provisions and flowers; and then organized a car for me to use to meet the boss at the airport. It all worked really well…and we’ll definitely be using him again.”
